I wasn't expecting Funston to deliver better conditions than Saturday, but the Fort pulled out all the stops for us and proved me wrong...
The only "aerial" shot taken by me of the day...
When I arrived, Sidewire Simpson was tearing it up...I set-up fairly quickly and was second in the air. Within a few passes, I was on my way to Westlake with Simpson in tow. This would be the first of about 3 trips to Westlake for this flight...
It was clear that today (Sunday) would be a great day in the air. The conditions were super smooth and buoyant. I had a fun time exploring the VG range on the new T2C and had all of Westlake to myself for the better part of the flight.
Cloudbase was at about 1000' MSL...I managed to kiss 1007' MSL at one point of the flight, but managed to stay out of the clouds...I have a thing about being seen in the air and know others like to fly in the clouds. Flying in the clouds is a good recipe for disaster that I try to avoid.
At the 2 hour mark of my flight, I thought about coming in for a landing and calling it a day. The air was too nice for that, though, so I stretched the flight out to the 3 hour mark plus some.
There was some thermal activity, too, while flying. Ken Martin and I were working bubbles of air inter-mixed with the usual ridge soaring at the north bunker. I was just able to get up to his altitude before he headed off back to Westlake. By that time, I was ready to land and call it a day.
This flight will probably stick with me for a while and has been the longest flight to date for 2010.
The ever-expanding would chip launch / landing area...
Flight time: 3 hours, 19 minutes (one flight)
