After picking up my Dad from the airport, we saw this helicopter crop dusting on our way back to Northfield. I had to stop and take some video. This was the pilot's final pass before heading east for what I assume to be more fuel. Fortunately, we were up wind of whatever it was he was spraying...
Later on...
After a short bike ride today, Wendy and I then drove to Stanton Airfield located about 4 miles east of Northfield...
Along the way, we stopped to check out the wind turbine at Carleton College...provides the campus with 40% of its energy to run the campus...St. Olaf has a wind turbine also, but Carleton was first, so once again Carleton beat the Dumb Ole's...spoken as a true townie...(inserted specifically for Dallas Willis' benefit)
Stanton is on the National Register of Historic Places...used as a WWII training area for pilots in the early 40's. As a teenager, I did 9 parachute jumps at this airport...8 tethered jumps and 1 free fall. The sky diving club has since moved on to Waseca, MN and their old shed is now used to store paint for the airfield. This place has a really cool fee about it...
Stanton has a couple nice Piper Cubs to check out and offers instruction in tail draggers as well as sail planes. There's a local sail plane club here and private owners store their planes here, also. The grass airstrip was impeccably manicured.
I wish I had spent more time here when I lived in Northfield.
Tomorrow, Wendy does the local little triathlon that Northfield is putting on...there is also going to be a hot rod show, jazz performance, and a few other things to check out.
More later...
